the art of eavesdropping

eavesdrop|ˈēvzˌdräp| verb ( -dropped , -dropping ) [ intrans. ]secretly listen to a conversation : she opened the window just enough to eavesdrop on the conversation outside.

have you been eavesdropping?? i have been though..haha. its not a bad thing after all, if you look at it from another angle. i find it quite amazing to listen to other’s conversation. like right now, i’m trying hard to listen to what my mom is talking on the phone about. and then i guess who is she talking to, and i confirms that my guess is 99% correct as the conversation goes on. previously while i was on my way home on a bus, i overheard 2 girl talking about some lucky charm tingy (i guess). they were discussing like which color represents what. so just like a few weeks ago, i was on this long bus journey to chinatown. i was ipodding at first, then this two aunties boarded the bus and sat right behind me, started chatting really loudly. so, i took off one of my earplugs and started listening. (i mean, i can’t help it u see, they are like really loud.) so they were dwelling on daily lives, then children, giving birth even (like how long they were in pain), how nasty the in-laws were.

haha, i find it quite entertaining though, to hear different view from people as they discuss about all sorts of topics under the sun. and then as you listen, u start to visualise the scenario that they are talking about, and then curiously start thinking what kind of person they are, how do they look (esp when they are sitting behind u or all u see is the back view of their heads). think about how people communicate and spreads news around. it just makes you wonder about things, like how we were curious like cats about our surroundings and happenings in our childhood times. don’t you think certain curiosities just dies off when we reach a certain age? we just stop asking whys to random stuff, or we just accept things for what they are.

so i suggest, next time you take a public transport or plant yourself in some public spaces, try listening to whats happening around you, instead of just plugging in to ipods. it gives you a new type of enlightenment that you can’t get else where, and it will be fun to share it with others.

  6. I also do that… haha. didnt know so many people share the same “interest”.
But I can hardly hear any conversation. After so many times of taking the bus, there are 2 kinds of timing where I find the bus exceptionally quiet… 7am – 9am and 5pm – 7pm Before going to work and after work.

Everybody seems so sian…… going to work and sian………….. tired after work. I dono why everytime i take the bus, the people around me are always so quiet. hahaha.

  7. Xiao mei, i think you raised a very interesting topic man! For me, i will turn to my i pod.. and just tune myself to the music world… and shut out from the real world for a few moments… U know ah… if i am alone and i don’t tune in to my i pod, i will feel insecure… and do not know what to do kind.. haha… I guess i am weird….

  8. haha, LOL i used to be like that, like ipod is my shadow. but cos there are times when there’s unforeseen circumstances like a very short journey or batt flat, its then that i realised that it is interesting listening to conversations..haha
